Welcome to the 2022 Summer Institute on Equity in the Academic Experience!

Our goal for the Institute is to help your campus team connect your project:

  • to a specific equity issue that will serve as a high-leverage opportunity for your progress.

  • to the strategic equity goals of your institution.

  • to similar work happening in other parts of your institution.

  • to the broader higher education equity ecosystem, including institutions with common geographic and/or project interests.

The 2022 Summer Institute on Equity in the Academic Experience is hosted by the American Talent Initiative and the following leadership sites who shared responsibility for the planning and programming:
Claremont-McKenna College | George Mason University | Georgetown University | Ohio State University | Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg | Princeton University | Rutgers University, New Brunswick | University of Iowa | University of the Pacific | University of Pittsburgh | Xavier University of Louisiana

Centering Equity in Enrollment Management and Admissions Strategies
The importance of enrollment management and admissions in achieving greater equity in higher education is clear. This isn't a one-size-fits-all issue, however, so we will begin this session by exploring how different institutions define "equity" in the context of access to higher education. How does the institutional history, current day context, and strategic equity goals affect admissions policies and procedures?

We'll next look at how the pandemic - and other societal, economic, cultural issues - have affected what schools are seeing in enrollment management and admissions. What new challenges/opportunities have arisen? Are these short- or long-term changes? What is worrisome/exciting about the future as we look not only at our own evolving institutions but also at the changing K-12 landscape and student populations?

Part of the work of this Institute is to think holistically about the higher education ecosystem. Thus, while each school often focuses on their piece of the higher education pool of applicants, here we'll close by exploring how different institutions can work in complementary ways to support the educational success of a greater number and greater diversity of students.

Equity Leadership: Responding to Change, Continuity, & Sustainability
In higher education, efforts toward educational equity happen in the context of – and need to create resistance against – systems that are structurally inequitable. The type of radical change needed to transform these systems requires synergy between bold new ideas and sustainable solutions.

Changes in leadership can bring new thinking and create welcome disruptions within institutions, while long-term institutional leaders have the necessary network and knowledge of the institutional landscape. In a time of unprecedented turnover throughout the educational system, we see value in intentionally creating partnerships that draw on the complementary strengths of new and established leaders.

This session offers a conversation between two such institutional leaders. One has a long history with the institution and the other is relatively new. One sits in a University-wide position outside the academic structures; the other is a dean of the largest school.

Together, they will discuss the challenges and opportunities for strategic planning and navigating institutional change related to equity and inclusion. Although both leaders are at Georgetown University, the session is constructed to help open up issues of leadership and strategic change that could be applicable anywhere.

Using Data on Campuses/Campus Climate Surveys
Drawing on campus climate surveys, student success data, and other sources institutions increasingly have lots of information about barriers to equity on their campuses. However, using this information requires much more than just analysis and report writing. Join us for a discussion about how we are communicating, collectively interpreting, and using data to inspire specific actions at our institutions. Specifically, we will host discussions focused on the following questions: What data have we found most useful in moving stakeholders to take action on equity issues? How have or could we engage our stakeholders at our institutions with these types of data? How have or could we use data to inspire specific actions, policies, or structures that support equity?

Roundtable Takeaways
  1. Ideas for the types of data and research projects that can produce actionable information about equity
  2. Techniques for how to engage stakeholders with equity data
  3. Tactics for responding to pushback and deficit models/explanations when engaging groups or decision makers with equity data
  4. Approaches for going beyond communicating data to helping campus stakeholders act on data
