Welcome to the 2022 Summer Institute on Equity in the Academic Experience!

Our goal for the Institute is to help your campus team connect your project:

  • to a specific equity issue that will serve as a high-leverage opportunity for your progress.

  • to the strategic equity goals of your institution.

  • to similar work happening in other parts of your institution.

  • to the broader higher education equity ecosystem, including institutions with common geographic and/or project interests.

The 2022 Summer Institute on Equity in the Academic Experience is hosted by the American Talent Initiative and the following leadership sites who shared responsibility for the planning and programming:
Claremont-McKenna College | George Mason University | Georgetown University | Ohio State University | Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg | Princeton University | Rutgers University, New Brunswick | University of Iowa | University of the Pacific | University of Pittsburgh | Xavier University of Louisiana

Monday Team Time

Suggested Questions to be asking each other during this time:
  • What perspectives are represented on your team? Whose voices are missing?
  • How would you describe the places at your institution where you have influence?

Goal-setting:
  • What is your team looking to accomplish during/gain from the institute?
  • What is the ultimate ‘goal’ of your project? In 3-5 years' time, how would you describe the impact and efficacy of your intended project?

Contextualizing your project in your campus’ equity strategy:
Looking at your campus equity strategy
  • Who shaped this strategy? If one does not exist, what attempts were made?o Who is/is not empowered in this strategy?
  • Where does your goal fit into the strategy?
  • What impact will achieving your goal have on your campus?
  • How can the different projects – on one campus or among campuses –create synergy (or conflict)?

Institute Schedule: How will you make the best use of the institute to …
  • ... maximize your team’s internal productivity?
  • … interact with other teams from your campus and other campuses?
  • … learn from the parallel sessions of roundtables and workshops?
  • … learn from select coaches attending the Institute?
  • Be sure to look ahead to the expectations for the Wednesday Campus Plan Feedback Session to help you pace and focus your work.

For your team to consider:
  • Start and stop times for teams should be developed internally.
  • We encourage 15-minute or 30-minute breaks to allow time to join provocations, workshops, and roundtables.
