Welcome to the 2022 Summer Institute on Equity in the Academic Experience!

Our goal for the Institute is to help your campus team connect your project:

  • to a specific equity issue that will serve as a high-leverage opportunity for your progress.

  • to the strategic equity goals of your institution.

  • to similar work happening in other parts of your institution.

  • to the broader higher education equity ecosystem, including institutions with common geographic and/or project interests.

The 2022 Summer Institute on Equity in the Academic Experience is hosted by the American Talent Initiative and the following leadership sites who shared responsibility for the planning and programming:
Claremont-McKenna College | George Mason University | Georgetown University | Ohio State University | Pennsylvania State University, Harrisburg | Princeton University | Rutgers University, New Brunswick | University of Iowa | University of the Pacific | University of Pittsburgh | Xavier University of Louisiana

Integrating Inclusive Pedagogy into University Systems: 3 Models

Our workshop focuses on combating systemic racism with systemic anti-racism in higher ed institutions, with a particular focus on curriculum and pedagogy. In 2021-2022, George Mason University offices and committees, with leadership from the president and provost and guidance from the Office of Undergraduate Education and the Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning, made progress on three separate initiatives aimed at integrating inclusive and equitable curriculum and pedagogy into core systems at the university.

On recommendation from the university president's Anti-Racism and Inclusive Excellence Task Force, we designed and passed modifications to general education requirements; in response to requirements from our accrediting body, we proposed and were approved for a ten-year “Quality Enhancement Plan” focused on Transformative Education through Anti-Racist Community Engagement; at the direction of the president, deans’ offices from each of the 10 colleges and schools submitted Inclusive Excellence Plans, which have been further supported by Spring 2022 curriculum-focused workshops for IEP leaders.

Participants in this workshop will get to hear our best “lessons learned,” and will have time and guidance to draft or enhance their own “deep curricular change” planning for altering the systems at their school to improve inclusive, anti-racist, and equitable teaching -- along with time to connect with other participants about their plans.
